Rails Replacement Service
Thursday 16th July 6:30pm at Colony, One Silk Street
This month, Daz is back, and he wants to tell us of some adventures outside the world of Rails.
At the last meetup, Dan mentioned wanting to use Sinatra for personal projects following the controversy around DHH—but finding it too limited for building substantial applications.
That conversation inspired me to build my own lightweight, domain-oriented Ruby web framework with the help of AI. It’s intended to fill the space between a micro-framework and Rails and combines Sinatra-style routing with explicit actions, Sequel persistence, HTML-first development and generators that produce understandable Ruby code based around modules rather than inheritance. It offers many of the practical features expected from a full-stack framework while depending on just six gems.
In this interactive session, we’ll build an application with the framework, examine the design decisions behind it, and discuss what works, what doesn’t, and what you’d like to see in a modern Rails replacement.
