What's Ruby?
According to the official Ruby language site, Ruby is “a dynamic, open source programming language with a focus on simplicity and productivity. It has an elegant syntax that is natural to read and easy to write”.
So, who are we?
We are a group of people in the North West of England, with an interest in all things Ruby or Rails ranging from beginners to experts - there's no requirement to be a Ruby guru to get involved, all you need is an interest in it.

Thursday 16th May - Nils - what are your Options?
Tony Hoare, inventor of the null reference, calls it his “billion dollar mistake”. Although Ruby goes some way to correcting it by making nil at least be a class with some reasonably helpful stuff on it, you’ll no doubt have been hit by a NoMethodError: undefined method 'foo' just as many times as me.
At May’s NWRUG, Russell Dunphy will try to convince you of two thing:
- There are not one, but two types of
nil - They are not a necessary evil - we can do something about them.
